  Introduction, Diabetes mellitus, commonly referred to as diabetes, is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood sugar levels over an extended period. It occurs when the body either does not produce enough insulin or is unable to effectively use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that regulates blood sugar (glucose) and allows it to enter the body's cells to be used as energy.
